Stone Drum

Fire & Blood

Stone Drum’s great hall becomes a place where the king’s physical vulnerability and his ability to direct events meet: while confined there with his legs bound and splinted, he learned that Queen Rhaenyra was returning and ordered a welcome that concealed a trap for her.

The Great Hall and the King’s Position

The king lay in Stone Drum’s great hall, his legs bound and splinted, when the first of Queen Rhaenyra’s ravens arrived from Duskendale. The brief description establishes the hall as the setting for his incapacity, but also for his continuing exercise of authority: despite his condition, he could issue orders concerning his half-sister’s homecoming.

The Welcome and the Trap

After learning that Queen Rhaenyra would return on the Violande, the king commanded Ser Alfred Broome to prepare a suitable welcome. The apparently hospitable instruction concealed a trap. The narrative marks the difference between what is known afterward and what the queen knew at the time: she stepped ashore unaware of the danger awaiting her. Stone Drum’s hall thus anchors the decision that turns a homecoming into an ambush, while the decisive moment of the queen’s arrival occurs elsewhere.
